bobwParticipant::I would like to thank the forum for allowing me to join, even though I am not a professional gunsmith. I consider myself an amateur hobbyist that has spent the last 26 years working on this hobby. In 2017 I decided to invest in manual machines to allow me to work with metal since I had retired in 2016. While I realize I will never reach the levels I have seen in this organization I strive to do the best work I can. I have been active on the ASSRA forum and written some articles for the organizations Journal. I used the same user name here as the ASSRA forum but maybe should have used my full name which is Robert Warren.
When building a rifle I used original actions, casting sets and machine actions from raw steel. Here are few photos of a rifle I completed a couple years ago. It is a close copy of a Sharps Pistol Rifle. The originals were originally made in the late 1850’s and 1860’s with only around 500 made. They were generally breech loading percussion rifles and never cartridge. I did not want this system so I incorporated a transfer bar, firing pin and extractor and chambered it in 25-20ss.
Back to the rifle build. I had to find an original rifle to copy. I found a gentleman in Texas that disassembled his and measured the parts. I then made drawings, these are not CAD but hand drawn. First, I made a plastic mockup to verify that the newly introduced parts would work. Once verified, I then made every part of the rifle trying to keep the finished product looking like the original. I will add that my machines are all manual without DRO on anything, no CNC used in anyway. This not because I don’t want DRO or power feed features, it’s just what I have.
While I can do light engraving I did not do this. Diane Scalese did all the engraving.

bobwParticipantI need to also mention the wood. It is American Black Walnut. The rifle was stocked from a blank, by me.

Steven Dodd HughesParticipantQuite a sophisticated project, handsomely rendered and well finished. Diane’s engraving appropriate and pleasingly artistic. Congrats on completing a most original, historic and interesting rifle. Consider checkering in a flat-topped style. Nice photos too.
