I decided to get something started here in stock making since I posted a past project in metal working.
This is one of my current projects, still in process. This Ballard rifle has a rare Remington Walker Hepburn barrel on it. No one knows why, or how the barrel got on this rifle. But, a previous owner had disassembled the rifle and then passed away. The estate sold off all the parts separately. John Ambers got wind of what had happened and ended up buying all the parts, except the stock and maybe the forearm. The forearm, currently on the rifle, appears to be a Remington to me. John put the current stock on it, just so it was a complete rifle. But, that stock is not like what was originally on the rifle. Someone came up with a picture of the gun from a long time ago and it had a Schoyen style stock in the picture. So I’m getting a proper stock back on it, like from his shop and period.
The wood is English Walnut, probably California English. Stocked from a blank. I’m just getting started on the forearm and the stock is all rough shaped at this point. Still lots to do!
I found a gentleman, that is now retired from gunsmithing, that had a Schoyen buttplate that is exactly shaped as I needed.
